ADDGirl Sighted today!

As with anyone who has ADD, i get side tracked very easily. so when I am doing things, like housework, I try not to leave the room/area until the task is done, so I won’t forget where I was and what I was doing.

Yesterday my daughter came to see me in the back yard as I was cutting grass to tell me daddy needed me inside for help right away.

Today I came outside to do some yard work, and this is what I stumbled upon in the back yard…

Opps. ADDGirl Strikes again!

Opps. ADDGirl Strikes again!

And like so many oters with ADD, unti I saw the lawn mower sitting there, and the uncut patch of grass I didnt even remember that I had cut grass.

A Recent Study finds ADHD kids benefit from fidgeting

It is great to see the studies being done on ADD, so that doctors, teacher etc  just starting to try and wrap their brains around ADD will listen when there is scientific evidence behind the reasoning, but it is pretty commonly known among ADDers, that when we fidget we listen better, and learn better.

I homeschool my kids, and when they do math they  tap a pencil, chew the pencil, or swing their feet. When they are reading they are twirling in a chair or again, swinging their feet. I often let them play with playdough while we are doing stuff, to keep them on task.

I doodle when on the phone, as it seems to help me listen to the speaker better.I read better when there is  one non intrusive background noise to take away all the other noises, as well.

There are other studies now that show kids focus better when sitting on exercise balls rather than in chairs or desks as well, which some schools are starting to implement in small classrooms.

I’m glad to see the medical society catching up.

ORLANDO, Fla., May 25 (UPI) — Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder can actually concentrate better if allowed to fidget, a University of Central Florida study says.A team of researchers at the Orlando university said by studying 23 preteen male subjects, 12 of whom had been diagnosed with ADHD, they found the ADHD subjects began to noticeably fidget when facing short-term memory problems, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel said Monday.

Dr. Mark Rapport, who led the study, said fidgeting allows ADHD sufferers to keep their minds and bodies active since their brains typically do not produce enough dopamine to maintain alertness.

The ADHD subjects in Rapport’s study routinely fidgeted when tasked with memory problems, but those same kids were able to sit still when able to mentally relax and watch a scene from the movie “Star Wars.”

“Everybody moves more when they’re concentrating on the tasks, not just the ADHD kids,” Rapport told the Sentinel.

“But the ADHD kids moved significantly more,” he added.

Push & Turn

My son is 4 years old, and never stops shocking and amazing me!

In fact he scares me some times with his wit, intelligence, and humor for a little boy his age…I think I have a mini Jim Carrey or Robbin Williams on my hands here. He also amazes me physically with his strength and stamina. I’ve had to go through the house very carefully and make sure that anything that an ADD Spiderman could get into it, was removed or arranged in such a way that it could not be utilized to save the world in his little imaginary playing dress up super hero games.

Though it shocks everyone around us, it come as no suprize when I catch him scaling the 5 foot high chain link fence that encloses our yard, or climbing the cherry tree in the back yard to the highest branch, or walking with confidence along the balace beam, he and his sister made in the back yard of old saw horses and some 2 by 4′s.

But tonight he had me ( and DH “the mundane one”), once again, slack jawed, picking chin up off the floor.

He came to me all upset after leaving the bathroom, with an empty pill bottle from the recycle blue bin…(no worries, meds are kept out of sight and reach and away from him and our DD8)

what had me shocked is that he said ” I can’t open this and it says push and turn!” in a frustrated tone, as he tried with all his might to push and turn the cap from my empty Concerta bottle open.

pillscap

I WANTED to say “WOW you can read!!!!”  but what I said instead was, ” where does it say push & turn?” He showed me, and then I told him, “well yes your correct. And, you shouldn’t be playing with pill bottles, even if they are empty”  and took it from him and he went off on his way.

Then later after the moment was passed and not related, I said ” so, you can read huh? that’s pretty cool” and he said all disappointed ” ya, I can read, but I can’t write yet”

We talked about his reading and he told me he has read three Clifford books, and his cars books, and 1 fish 2 fish red fish blue!! I told him i was so proud of him for reading and that he should not be shy to let us know that he can. I also told him that writing takes a lot of practice, and he’ll make lots of mistakes, but that it was ok. The other day I pulled out the dry erase marker, and the electronic practice writing desk by Vtech, that his sister used to learn her letters, and told him it was his now.. he was so proud and has been feverishly hyper focused on using it since.

THE KID IS SECRETLY TEACHING HIMSELF TO READ AND WRITE!!!!

I’m amazed! I need to remember to pull out the leap pad system and let him play around with that. he found the spiderman book and cartridge for it the other day. I’ve been meaning to put batteries in it for him, and of course…I keep forgetting

Canadian Family

canadian geese

On the way home from town from my4 year old son’s swim class, we stopped for a moment to allow this family of canadian geese safely pass over to the millpond from the creek. I love that life gives us so many opportunities to homeschool. The spring is such a busy time. between these guys, and the barn swallows, the  back yard downy woodpecker and the like. the kids are learning a lot about wildlife and life cycles.

I heard it through the grapevine

Grapevine wreaths

We are clearing off the back fence of grapevines that are causing the fence to actually be pulled down. So Instead of burning them all, I decided to make wreaths and baskets of them. IT’s a great ADDCraft because you don’t need to worry about attention to detail. the more messy and half thrown together they look the better they are :) I hope to post a basket picture soon, but right now the wreaths are only getting a small amount of my attention. I have been falling behind and I need to break ground on the garden before the strawberry plants die! The basket in the workshop, almost finished. I’m thinking I’m going to tag them and put them at the end of the driveway with a sale sign and see what happens. People are starting to go on those slow  Sunday drives in the county now that it is Spring.

Starting Fresh

I know.. you’re saying…”Woah! What happened to the site!?”

No, it’s not a mistake. I’ve changed it….too many responsibilities, not enough time, and despite over 10,000 hits a month as it was, I never get any feed back. It makes me feel like it is not worth it.

I have two young kids both with neurodiversities that make life an ADDventure and interesting and a joy and a challenge every single day, as well as a disabled husband who needs my constant care and help.

These things leave me little time for much else these days. Especially since we moved to rural, where gardening, cutting wood, and others things require so much of my attention.

So, I’ve decided to make this my site about ADD since it is something that is a large part of my life. My daily blog of being a woman/wife/mother with ADD, my ADDventures in Motherhood, and country living. I’ll share my ADDCrafts friendly crafts, my ADD Friendly Recipes, as well as other things i enjoy such as recycled junk art, note cards, and other things I make like my paintography and photography, and such. Perhaps even a little bit of my music.

I’ll soon be offering the CleanHome booklet and dayplanner to purchase under ADDing Routine category for anyone interested. As always I’d love to hear from you so feel free to leave me a message.

Blessings
